The trick to most work is doing it before anyone notices you’re the one that did it. A good fence post doesn’t brag. Neither does a true level table. The river carries on whether we stand to admire it or not, and most days that feels like generosity.

I keep a pocket notebook and a pencil that doesn’t mind getting wet. I favor tools that work in the rain and ideas that survive contact with a creek crossing. If you’re looking for official guidance, consult the ranger; if you’re looking for the unofficial truth, ask the brakeman.
